Description

In the heart of Ermelo, between Kerklaan and Postlaantje, a new urban design concept was developed in collaboration with a former client and a group of engaged local residents. Their shared goal: to create a contemporary and livable alternative for this prominent site next to the Immanuël Church.

What makes this plan unique is its open and walkable layout. The two adjacent streets are connected through a series of carefully designed public spaces. These spaces are not only well-structured but also activated by homes that face onto them.

One of the key features is the “Bagijnhofje”, an intimate courtyard framed by wide, shallow houses. These homes echo the character of well-known local buildings, such as the Riemer & Walinga bookshop. Their compact footprint creates a gently tapering space that enhances both the atmosphere and sense of enclosure.

At the end of the courtyard, a small tower-like building forms a gateway into the next space: a quiet, courtyard-style plaza surrounded by apartments. With no car traffic and balanced proportions between building height and open space, this area offers a peaceful retreat right in the centre of town.

The route continues via another passage toward Kerklaan. Just before reaching the street, visitors encounter a forecourt, enclosed by L-shaped buildings oriented towards the church. This transitional space is enriched by the architectural presence of the Immanuël Church and serves as a welcoming entrance to the new residential area.

The building heights have been carefully calibrated: slightly taller volumes are concentrated in the centre, around the gateway structure, while the edges of the plan respect the scale of the existing surroundings. The result is a vibrant, human-scale ensemble, perfectly suited to Ermelo’s fine-grained urban fabric.
