This project undertakes the profound transformation of a former children’s prison into a care home for the elderly, blending architectural ingenuity with restorative design. The existing structure, a relic of confinement, has been thoughtfully repurposed to serve as a place of care and dignity, demonstrating that architecture can reframe spaces of restriction into environments of connection and healing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The heart of this initiative is the reimagined inner courtyard around the existing chapel, the recreational area that serves as a buffer between the main building and the forest behind it and the new designed facade covering as a mantel the existing historic building. We propose a landscaped intervention built in green terraces that merges seamlessly into the spaces between the structures, like a hand intertwining with another in a silent accord. The courtyard now serves as a central, green sanctuary, wrapped by a continuous, landscaped structure, offering a cohesive flow between indoor and outdoor environments. The landscaping, designed with sensitivity to both aesthetics and functionality, incorporates green areas, specific open spaces for gardening and growing all kinds of vegetables and plants, and accessible pathways, creating a living ecosystem that supports the well-being of the residents. This green lung serves as a daily invitation for reflection, movement, and social interaction, turning the former institution into a space that fosters life and connection. Third parties like young people etc are also invited to do gardening in these areas, strengthening this way the connection between the young and the old. We arranged the independent apartments along two sides of the new structure, with entrances leading directly into the serene inner garden. In contrast, the smaller, less independent units are situated within the historic building, preserving its unique character. At the center of this landscaped design, we created vibrant common areas in the shape of pavilions for daily activities, including spaces for theater, art classes, exhibitions, sportive areas etc. This layout fosters a sense of community and encourages interaction among residents. Additionally, the former chapel has been transformed into a welcoming restaurant for residents and non-residents surrounded by lush gardens and offering beautiful views of the greenery. This space serves as a gathering point, providing a warm atmosphere where residents can enjoy meals and connect with one another in a tranquil setting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This project focuses on transforming a former place of confinement into a space for care and community. By integrating elements of nature, history, and modern design, we have created a supportive environment that prioritizes the well-being of its residents.
