Description

The Carouge Community House and Theatre fuse two distinct architectural volumes: one a refined reimagining of the existing community house, the other a bold, contemporary addition for the theatre. Together, these forms are linked in a bayonet configuration, creating two contrasting yet complementary public squares. The first is a lush green haven, with towering trees casting shade, while the second is a more open, stone-paved space, designed for events and gatherings that animate the urban landscape.

The curving, sculptural roofs sweep gracefully above, bringing the two buildings together into a harmonious whole. Strips of green sedum soften the hard edges of the volumes, creating a serene atmosphere and giving the entire area a distinct new identity. This is a place where the arts and community life are brought to the forefront. The cantilevered canopy, extending over the plaza facades, forms a unifying arcade that links the buildings while connecting the two open spaces. This architectural gesture creates a seamless flow between the buildings and the squares, inviting the public to move freely between them.

The foyer spaces, opening onto the plazas, infuse the public realm with energy and warmth, transforming these civic buildings into open, accessible hubs of activity. Two volumes, two squares—woven together in a gently undulating sculptural form, a “nouvelle vague” for Carouge that redefines the relationship between architecture, public space, and community.
