Description
The Ship is a refined four-story apartment building located along the floodplains of the Maas river, smoothly integrating with its natural surroundings. Designed with inspiration from nautical imagery, the building’s form evokes the dynamic silhouette of a ship, linking it to its unique location at the edge of the dike. The elongated structure displays a sharp, asymmetrical bow and a rounded stern, creating a flowing, forward-moving aesthetic.
The building’s design prioritizes both functionality and panoramic views. The large end apartments are designed with full 360-degree orientation, offering extensive views, while the intermediate apartments are thoughtfully oriented toward the Maas river, enhancing the connection with the surrounding landscape. On the top floor, a distinctive, rounded form resembles the bridge of a ship, housing “The Captain’s Place,” the largest and most exclusive apartment in the complex.
The materials chosen reflect a harmonious blend of modernity and natural elements, with aluminum cassette panels used for the cladding and wooden panels along the walkways. The slightly twisted position of the building allows for a staggered arrangement of apartments, enhancing privacy and creating spacious balconies that extend into the open air.
At ground level, the building features a partially open floor plan, with covered parking spaces beneath, which enhances the floating, suspended quality of the design. This elevated form gives the impression that the building is ready to glide across the river, embodying the feeling of a ship poised to sail away.
This architectural project combines aesthetic innovation with practical design, offering a unique living experience that connects residents to the serene flow of the Maas river while offering privacy, comfort, and a sense of motion.
